“This was a fantastic speech! Not only inspiring but brave too.
“Ed is serious politician, driven by a sense of duty to make the world a better, fairer place for everyone. I’m lucky to have spent time with him so the warmth and humour people saw this week at the conference is not new to me; but I don’t think talking about his family and his background was easy for him. His commitment to what he does shone through.
“The theme of ‘One Nation’ was embedded into this speech – we have to do away with this ‘us and them’ culture, for example where only the wealthy escape the pain of this double-dip recession. We’re clearly not ‘all in it together’ as the Coalition government suggests!
“But Ed also said that we all have a role and responsibility to play in creating a more equal society – if we can work we must, but social protection is there for those who genuinely cannot.
“On the economy Ed reminded us that the Tory/Lib Dem Government have failed to meet their key objective – to reduce the deficit. In fact their mismanagement of the economy is actually increasing borrowing!
“I’m sure there will be those who say ‘what about your policies?’ This speech set out Ed’s vision and values today; the policy specifics will come later as we engage the whole country in these developments; however, one thing he made clear: we may not be able to reverse all public spending cuts.
“As a member of the Shadow Health Team who worked hard to stop the Health and Social Care Bill I was delighted that Ed confirmed (as he has done previously) that those elements of the Health Act that threaten the NHS as a universal, comprehensive and free service will be repealed – but without a costly reorganisation.”
