Have a Safe Christmas

Christmas is a critical time for charitable giving, with many charities relying on money raised in the winter months to fund services throughout the year. While charity fraud is rare, there are some people who try to abuse the generosity of others, cheating supporters and genuine charities out of much-needed donations.

That is why I am supporting the joint Charity Commission and Fundraising Standards Board  ‘Safe Christmas’ campaign, to alert people in Oldham East and Saddleworth of a few simple checks to take before giving to charity to ensure that your donations go where they want them to this Christmas.

To make sure your charity donations go the right place this Christmas by following these tips –

S – search for a charity’s name, registration number and landline on fundraising materials

A – ask to see a collector’s ID badge and don’t be afraid to ask questions

F – find the FRSB tick logo, showing that the charity’s fundraising is regulated

E – ensure the collection device is sealed

X – xtra information about charities can be found at www.gov.uk/charity-commission

M – make sure clothing collection bags are clearly branded with a charity’s details

A – always check email and web links are genuine before donating

S – still unsure? Contact your favourite charity direct and donate
