Education, education, education…but this time for all pupils

IMG_5709Andy Burnham MP, has made the first pledge of his leadership campaign this week saying he will raise the status of technical education by guaranteeing either a high quality apprenticeship or place at university to any young person who gets the required grades.

Making the first of five major speeches he will deliver during the leadership contest, at the Arriva Traincare depot in Crewe, Andy has taken on the education, education, education mantra but made it clear that, this time, it’s meant to apply to all students not just those who want to go to university.

His vision is to raise the status of technical education to the same professional standing as academic qualifications.

What he’s promising is nothing short of a revolution in technical education giving it all the support and prestige that comes with following the university route.

To achieve this Andy knows we will need good quality apprenticeships in much more plentiful supply than are available today and we’ll need much clearer information about opportunities for apprenticeships across the country, and a proper structure for how to access them.

To achieve this Andy’s ambition to set up a national UCAS-style system for apprenticeships, allowing young people to be able to find, and apply for them across the country in exactly the same way as academic students do for university.

The best candidates would be matched to the best placements and employers would be able to fill gaps in skills shortages.

Crucially, we would be investing properly in our skills base which, ultimately, is the best way to build a modern economy.

Andy stressed that Labour will always be there to help people with the least such as those on zero-hours contracts or low pay. But he knows we need to be more than that. We need to be the party that helps everyone get on in life.

Andy’s vision is to lift the aspirations of young people across the country, raising their sights, rewarding those who work hardest, giving all children hope and a goal in life.
