Oldham Women’s Eid Festival

Debbie Abrahams MP with Aqueela, one of the Festival's participants

Earlier this month I visited the Pakistani Community centre in Oldham to speak to 700 women at the women’s Eid Festival on the invitation of the students of Jamia Muhammadiyah Islamic College.

The event was created to bring together women from in and around the Oldham area to interact with each other and celebrate the Eid festival in a safe environment.

It was a real honour to be asked to speak by Jamiah Muhammadiyah students at this event and meet so many wonderful women from the local Asian community, including Aqueela (pictured right).

I spoke about the importance of the universal principles of kindness, honesty and integrity, whether you are religious or not and also highlighted the particular pressures on women in a time of austerity; the effect of domestic violence against women and my campaign against this.
