Supporting Small Business Saturday

14-12-04 SBS Twirly Swirly SweetsYesterday I popped in to the Swirly Twirly Sweets shop in Oldham town centre to start my Christmas shopping and show my support for this year’s Small Business Saturday, which is taking place on Saturday 6th December.

Small Business Saturday is a grass-roots campaign that encourages people to shop locally and support small businesses in the local community. Last year it was the biggest celebration of small businesses in the UK and gave a boost to local shops through extra trade of nearly £500m.

I am encouraging everyone to take part this year and support local businesses in the run-up to Christmas.  It is so important that we support our small and independent businesses in Oldham and Saddleworth. They are a vital part of our local economy, our community and a source of jobs so we really need to get behind them and show our support. Our local businesses are doing a fantastic job and they give us greater choice and that something a little bit special.

Swirly Twirly Sweets, at Manchester Chambers in the town centre, was selected as one of the Small Business Saturday top 100 businesses featured in this year’s campaign.

Rachel Doyle, owner of Swirly Twirly Sweets, told me that it has been a great boost for their business to be featured in the Small Business Saturday top 100 campaign this year because it helped make many more people aware of the shop and it was really good for encouraging people to think more about using small businesses in the area. She has also found that it’s a good opportunity for small businesses to all link together and support each other.

On one of the busiest shopping days of the year Small Business Saturday puts a spotlight on the huge contribution of small businesses and encourages people to buy from small shops and independent firms.  In Oldham there are special events planned for Small Business Saturday including the Council’s Brass Monkeys music event which will see brass bands playing on the High Street and in front of the Market Hall.
